Special Issue on Regional Trade Agreements in Africa and the Implications for the African
Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

On behalf of Ilorin Journal of Economic Policy (IJEP), Prof. Temidayo Akinbobola (Obafemi Awolowo University), Prof. Adeolu Adewuyi (University of Ibadan), Dr. Abdulhakeem Kilishi (University of Ilorin) and Dr. Seyi SaintAkadiri (Research Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria) will be editing a special issue titled ‘Regional Trade Agreements in Africa and the Implications for the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA)’.

When fully operational, AfCFTA, which is one of the flagship projects of the African Union’s agenda 2063 will become the biggest trade agreement in the world. According to the African Union, the agreement has the capability to create a continental free trade zone worth 3.4 trillion dollars in terms of Gross Domestic Product.

In a world that is witnessing the resurgence of protectionist ideas that call into question the relevance of economic models emphasizing the importance of international agreements, this special issue is targeted at unpublished papers that provide useful insight into the benefits that could be derived and challenges that could crop up from the
establishment of this landmark agreement.

Topics of interest include but are not restricted to:

  • Theoretical issues related to African trade agreements.
  • Policy and institutional matters relating to African trade agreements.
  • State sovereignty and regional free trade agreements.
  • Welfare implications of regional free trade agreements.
  • Implication of regional free trade agreements for Trade competitiveness.
  • The relationship between trade agreements and cross-country shocks transmission.

The standard for publication will be the same as required for regular publications in IJEP. We however take
particular interest in exceptionally innovative papers.
